Spotsylvania Founder's Day and VA250 Commemoration featuring the VA250 Mobile Museum Experience

Spotsylvania Founder

About

On Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3, 2026, Spotsylvania County will honor two historic milestones: the county’s 305th anniversary and 250 years of American independence.

The Spotsylvania County Founder’s Day and VA250 Commemoration will feature the VA250 Mobile Museum Experience, "Out of Many, One," alongside museum tours, living history demonstrations and family-friendly activities.

VA250 Mobile Museum Experience

As a proud partner of the VA250 Commission, Spotsylvania is thrilled to highlight Virginia’s pivotal role in the American battle for independence. The mobile museum, housed in an expandable tractor-trailer, will bring the story of the nation’s founding to the Spotsylvania County Museum (6159 Plank Road) on May 2-3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. "Out of Many, One" features high-tech displays, interactive exhibits and compelling artifacts. Admission to the mobile museum and onsite parking are free.

Founder’s Day

Spotsylvania County Founder’s Day marks the anniversary of the county’s official establishment on May 1, 1721. Founder’s Day provides a time to recognize the county’s historical significance and more than three centuries of growth, resilience and progress.

On Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., festivities will include free museum tours, promotions, giveaways, children’s activities and living history. The rain date for reenactors is Sunday, May 3.

Spotsylvania County Museum

The recently reset Spotsylvania County Museum, a destination featured in the Virginia 250 Passport, is the perfect venue for this memorable weekend. Detailed exhibits guide visitors chronologically through the county’s history, from ancient times to the modern era. The museum also houses a gift shop containing unique souvenirs, books and toys.

The facility sits on eight acres owned by Spotsylvania County, adjacent to land operated by the American Battlefield Trust. The surrounding First Day at Chancellorsville Battlefield features wayside exhibits and a trail network.

Spotsylvania County’s Revolutionary history

The mobile museum visit is particularly relevant to Spotsylvania, a community whose significant Civil War history often overshadows other eras. However, Spotsylvania’s people and places contributed greatly to the American Revolution. A temporary exhibit at the museum focuses on how the Revolutionary War affected Spotsylvania’s economy, while a virtual exhibit, "Spotsylvania in the American Revolution," reveals the county’s profound impact on the birth of the country.
