Uncovering History: Ground Penetrating Radar at Union Church

About

The Town of Mount Jackson is excited to share the fascinating results of the recent Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey conducted at the historic Union Church Cemetery. This high-tech exploration was designed to identify unmarked graves, confirm cemetery boundaries, and ensure that future walkways and gathering spaces can be planned with the utmost respect for those interred on the grounds.

Using advanced technology valued, expert archaeologist Mark Ludlow, along with several supporting citizens, spent several days performing field work to map the subsurface of the triangular cemetery site. The findings are significant: the survey has identified over 1,000 burials, providing a much clearer picture of the site’s density and historical importance. We invite the community and visitors to join us for a special presentation of these findings. This is a unique opportunity to see how modern technology helps us preserve and honor our local heritage.

Come learn about the precise locations of previously unknown burials and how these metal-marked sites will be preserved for generations to come. This project marks another successful step in our ongoing commitment to historical preservation within the town.
